Recently the Emily Carr University of Art and Design formerly known as the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design introduced a new logo to go along with its new name. To my surprise when I was reading Brand New the blogger had some harsh critique on the new logo. He claims it is unoriginal and tries too hard to be artsy. I have to disagree with his claim because I like the new version better compared to the old one. The old logo had a font that made the title unreadable and it was too cramped and not aligned. I like simplicity and the new design has an attractive font and a simple design. It may not be the best logo I have ever seen but compared to the other one it is cleaner and clearer. In my opinion the older logo is the example of being too artsy because of the font choice. The circle sketch is simple and although the blogger claims its trying to be artsy I see the circle as a starting point. A designer and artist just like everyone needs to learn the basis first and I assume the circle represents the beginning of their progress through school. Simplicity is the better solution for the schools logo!

I agree with you in that the new design is much more simple and more visually appeasing for this reason. I don't quite understand the circle though. For an arts and design school I thought they would have incorporated more color into their design for some reason. Where is the university located?
I'm definitely in agreement, the second design is much more visually appealing than the original. Even though I don't understand the message behind the circle, it's a really interesting and eye-catching symbol. Thanks for posting!
I definitely think the new logo is an improvement. I don't think it's particularly interesting or innovative, but it's simple and it sends the right message. The old one is jumbled and hard to read, it also looks like the name of a nursery school rather than a college. So I would say I agree that the commentator was wrong, although the logo might not be genius, it's a serious improvement.
