MacAvoy Logo System

Visual Message:

In creating my logo and stationary system I wanted to portray myself as a strong and balanced individual. My logo in particular is a reflection of my background growing up as the son of a naval officer overseas in Japan. The logo is a dual image of a mountain (Mt.Fuji) representing Japan, and a boat representing the Navy. Together these form a sailboat, which I chose for its balancing, flow through, and racing qualities. As a public relations major this connects because I need to be aware of current trends in the PR world, be at the front of the pack, and reach a balance of communication between the public and organization I am representing. The tone is professional, but exudes a personality that is distinctly me. The hard edges combined with the curves in my design create image that is both an eye-catching and creative.

Audience:

This logo system was designed specifically for me. I would use it for contacting professional organizations, prospective employers, and fellow students.

Design Strategy:

My design communicates my message to the audience by making the logo very prominent in all instances of the logo system. The initial impression is one of intrigue because people are not sure if it is a sailboat that they are seeing or something else. The style in which the boat is drawn is similar to Japanese Kanji and Hiragana (writing styles), which alludes to my connection with Japan. The font I chose for the logo system was Ocean Sans. I thought this was a great font to use because of its direct connections with sailing and similarities with my logo drawing. I chose to go with the italics for my name to give the image a sense of motion, as if a breeze were blowing. I do vary my design amongst my business card and other system entities. For the business card I decided to make the color very dominant so that it would be remembered by the receiver and standout amongst other business cards. The envelope and stationary logo invert the color scheme, which allows for a much less visually prominent image. Overall I think the message remains the same amongst the three system pieces.

Sources and Influences:

Both Mt. Fuji and naval ships influenced the outcome of my design. I did not specifically look at either while designing my logo. I just took what I knew from memory and applied it to the logo.

Extras:

My design uses the colors red, white, and blue. I chose red because of its direct connection with Japan (national colors are red and white) and blue because of its connection with the ocean. I use white just to make my text easier to read. The combination of the three colors gives my logo system a very patriotic look, though this is unintentional.

I think you logo is awesome. It incorporates so many underlying things while maintaining a simple clarity. I think that the use of a sort of classic red and blue really worked well. In my opinion this really looks professional.

Like we discussed in class, I really love your logo. The continued boldness of the colors throughout all of the pieces connected them, and it made your logo stand out in a good way. Like Beckie said, this is creative and professional. I love the stroke after your name on the letterhead; it does connote sailing away/the shore and it makes the entire piece much softer and appealing. If there had been a hard edge, it would have felt too abrupt. Nice job!!!

I truly applaud you on the success of your logo design system. It really manages to incorporate who you are personally and professionally. I think your color choice was appropriate and smart, and definitely related to your background. I also like the duplicity of the ship and the mountains. People can look at it and get one, the other, or even both! I think that this logo could work for a business if you choose or simply serve as a personal stationery set. Overall, great thought and execution. (:

I really like how you reversed out the colors with the white from your business card to the envelope. It looks really cool and very classy. Overall i think you did a great job with your logo!

I love the idea of your logo and the way you used it across your whole stationary set. The large logo on the front of the envelope fits in really nicely with your name and address in the corner. I also think your color choices work really nicely together and are not to overwhelming when they cover up most of the business card. It looks really well done and I think it could be used for personal stationary but also for professional purposes.

There are several aspects of you logo I really like. I like the way that the view of the boat is from the "head-on" perspective so it appears to be moving toward you. I also like the use of colors and the way that the line on your stationary fades out to the right. I think it's also cool how it ties into your background as you explained in class, yet it still remains very professional and could be used in a professional setting. I know you mentioned in class that it was not intentional, but I also like the way that the sails of the ship appear to make up an "M" representing your last name. Looking at the logo I get the sense that you are both professional and driven with the ship sailing directly at the person looking at the design, yet also a very creative person. I really like your design system! Great job!
