The Lions accidentally leaked their new logo a few weeks ago when a fan found a toy truck online with the new logo traced across its trailer. The concept of a new logo had been rumored around the organization, but nothing had been confirmed until this incident. I'm sure Detroit was planning to unveil it at the 2009 NFL Draft.
Overall, the changes are pretty minimal. The body of the lion has been slimmed down and is much more defined, making it altogether more frightening. The saloon text of the old logo was also replaced with a more modern edgier font type. Personally, I think the grey splash is a nice touch. I think these changes are for the better. Obliviously last year's logo wasn't doing anything for the team because they went 0-16. I think the new logo will appeal to a younger crowd and hopefully allow the Lions to forget their dismal past.

I really really like the new design. I agree that the grey is a nice touch. It increases the intensity and impact of the image which is so important for a sports team. I like the facial details too because honestly, I don't really think that the old logo was very distinguishable. I don't know if the logo will help the team to win more games, but it will certainly give fans and viewers something more aesthetically pleasing to look at!
I don't blame the Lions for making a new logo. After having the worst possible season ever in sports (I mean really, not one game?) they probably felt it would be a good idea to completely change the image of the team, beginning with the logo. I think the old logo is more of the original football style, and I agree with the fact that they are updating it for younger generations. They are probably trying to create a fanbase for the future. I think the logo is nice-- the explosiveness of it on the truck is interesting and I like that it stands out. Also, the new, simpler silhouette of the lion is a bit more abstract yet completely readable. I like it.
I'm all for the new logo as well. The new detailing makes the lion ore recognizable using the gestalt principles. The addition of the eye and teeth make the logo more fierce, which is what you want to portray to opposing teams.
